Opera can move us.
Opera can make us laugh.
Opera can even shock us.
Welcome to Madison Opera’s 2022/23 season.
The thrilling Salome is a visceral drama that tells of Princess Salome, John the Baptist, and King Herod, culminating in the famous Dance of the Seven Veils. It will be our first production of a Richard Strauss opera, with all the musical forces and excitement that entails.
In winter, we put two great 20th century composers on a highly-theatrical doublebill. Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti is thoroughly American in its story of a suburban marriage, with an irresistibly jazz-tinged score. Kurt Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins combines opera and dance to tell of a woman searching for happiness. Kanopy Dance joins us for this “ballet chanté.”
The Marriage of Figaro is quite simply sublime. Mozart’s transcendent score illuminates every moment of this human comedy where the stakes are real, the people are flawed, and laughter goes hand-in-hand with love.
In a world that brings new challenges every day, opera allows us to step into a different place and time, transporting us with every performance.
Please join us all season to celebrate the power of opera to connect us across centuries, continents, and languages.
